HYDERABAD: US-based, globally licensed sports merchandise giant Fanatics, which has just set up its largest technology innovation center outside the US in the HiTec City area of ​​Hyderabad with a capacity to house approximately 325 techies, is now betting big on this center it transitions from just a globally licensed sports merchandise player to a nextgen global digital sports platform.
Fanatics, which entered Hyderabad in 2018 with its Indian technology innovation center with just a few techies, has now grown to about 200 employees and is hungry for more than double as it looks set to use technology to make its big transformational game, Fanatics’ chief technology officer Ramana Thumu told TOI.
“We aim to grow to about 250-300 techs in the next year and double the workforce of our Indian technology innovation center to about 500 techs by 2024,” said Ramana.
Noting that Fanatics is one of the few companies in the world to be at the intersection of sports, technology, data and commerce, Ramana said the company has spent more than $1 billion from 2015 to date on tech and data-driven innovation to powering its shift into a global digital sports platform that appeals to sports fans for all of their unique needs, from merchandise to placing bets to trading NFTs or buying tickets, among others. “We spend more than $200 million on technology every year,” he added.
According to Ramana, Fanatics will leverage its database of more than 80 million global consumers and is also looking at opportunities in the Indian market, but declined to elaborate further.
“We’re trying to reinvent and re-create the entire supply chain and inventory ecosystem so we can scale and ship faster to fans. We’re trying to create a personalized fan experience powered by ML and data science,” he said, adding that these emerging technologies are being used to predict fan behavior and purchasing patterns so that their manufacturing facilities can ramp up production based on these demand forecasts.
