Popular anonymous tipster LeaksApplePro has published a new blog post breaking down the prices for every iPhone 14 model, plus a gamble that Apple will make to justify the higher prices.

According to LeaksApplePro, the big disrupter is the new iPhone 14 Max — a 6.7-inch model which will replace the 5.4-inch iPhone 13 Mini. This introduction will see Apple replace its compact $699 smartphone with an $899 giant, which reshuffles the range. The result is the iPhone 14 becomes the cheapest model in the new line-up and there is a knock-on effect on the Pro models:

  • iPhone 14 – $799 (iPhone 13: $799)
  • iPhone 14 Max – $899 (iPhone 13 Mini: $699)
  • iPhone 14 Pro – $1099 (iPhone 13 Pro: $999)
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max – $1199 (iPhone 13 Pro Max: $1099)

LeaksApplePro also warns that the $1099 price for the iPhone 14 Pro is an “at best” scenario with Apple potentially pricing the Pro models even higher. “As I’ve been saying all this year, Apple plans to differentiate the Pro from the non-pro iPhones, including their pricing,” says the insider.

And what about the price justification? As multiple leaks have already revealed, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max will reuse the A15 chip from the iPhone 13 range. To get around this price/performance disparity, LeaksApplePro says Apple will simply rebrand the A15 chip as the A16. “And that’s not all,” the leaker explains. “Apple plans to use what the company wanted to be the A16 in the ’pro’ iPhones and call it the A16 Pro.”

Why is Apple making this decision? Chip shortages. “Apple and its partners are struggling to manufacture all the A16 and M2 chips they need, and they have to prioritize one of them, and that’s going to be the M2,” states LeaksApplePro.

If true, however understandable from a logistics perspective. this decision risks serious backlash. The only mitigating factor is Apple may use the iPhone 13 Pro version of the A15 chip (which has 6GB RAM Vs 4GB in the iPhone 13) for the standard iPhone 14 models. Even then, that chip is still called ‘A15’ in all Apple marketing. iPhone 14 schematics also show a visually identical design making even an ‘iPhone 13S’ name hard to justify.

For iPhone 14 Pro users, however, 2022 is going to be a big redesign year. Apple is determined to widen the gap between Pro and non-Pro models, as it has already with Pro and non-Pro MacBooks and iPads and, soon, Macs.

This all makes sense from a marketing and business perspective, but for millions of iPhone fans it is likely to prove a hard pill to swallow.
