The first day proved to be an exciting one all round, capped off by Serena Williams winning her opening match against Montenegro’s Danka Kovinic. The bad news, for her hopes of a fairytale finale, is that she’ll next face the No.2 seed Anett Kontaveit on Wednesday.
However, men’s No.4 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas is out, having lost to Daniel Galan of Colombia, while tenth seed Taylor Fritz and 16th seed Roberto Bautista Agut also crashed out of the tournament at the first hurdle. The likes of top seed Daniil Medvedev, fifth seed Casper Ruud and Britain’s Andy Murray are all safely through, though.
In the women’s singles, just one top-16 seed fell: Daria Kasatkina, number 10 at Flushing Meadows, lost to Britain’s Harriet Dart. There were wins for the likes of Leylah Fernandez, Coco Gauff, Ons Jabeur and the aforementioned Kontaveit.

Venus Williams also plays today, against Alison van Uytvanck, but the biggest ties are this evening: defending champion Emma Raducanu has a tough match against Alize Cornet, while Naomi Osaka vs Danielle Collins should be well worth watching.
